5 – Don’t leave any meat until the morning

We’re continuing our look at the 613 laws of Moses and focusing on the Passover instructions. We’ve attempted to show that the Mosaic code was either repealed or modified in the New Testament (and in some cases reinstated in the future Millennial temple). However sometimes its not as simple as either-or, rather we’ll see some of the laws are strangely tied together, and while they are repealed by association with the umbrella law (i.e. if Passover is no longer mandated, neither are the procedural laws for Passover), they are also fulfilled!

The Passover Lamb as we’ve noted earlier was Jesus the Messiah – the Lamb of God. And we see an interesting procedural law for the Passover – that nothing of it should remain until morning.

And ye shall let nothing of it remain until the morning; and that which remaineth of it until the morning ye shall burn with fire.

Exodus 12:10

Often times I try to look at the Old Testament prophecies from the eyes of those who heard them – i.e. could they have pieced together the clues to understand what the New Testament revealed? And Peter tells us – they often couldn’t – they literally did not understand what they said – because God prophesied thru them – and they weren’t able at that time to figure it out but they tried! To be fair – some things they could put together – others they could not.

Of which salvation the prophets have inquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you: Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow.

1 Peter 1:10-11

So would any of Moses’ hearers have noticed the connection between the Passover Lamb and the execution of a sinner worthy of death?

And if a man have committed a sin worthy of death, and he be to be put to death, and thou hang him on a tree: His body shall not remain all night upon the tree, but thou shalt in any wise bury him that day; (for he that is hanged is accursed of God;) that thy land be not defiled, which the Lord thy God giveth thee for an inheritance.

Deuteronomy 21:20-21

The Passover Lamb must be without blemish – and yet the convict is morally blemished. Why the connection that neither can remain overnight?

[57] When the even was come, there came a rich man of Arimathaea, named Joseph, who also himself was Jesus’ disciple:
[58] He went to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be delivered.
[59] And when Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,
[60] And laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock: and he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, and departed.

Matthew 27:57-60

The Passover Lamb was removed the day it was offered, because of the Jews concern for another law:

The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.

John 19:31

The death of the Lamb who took the curse – yet prevented the Land from being defiled – rather brought healing to the Land!

Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:

Galatians 3:13

Did Jesus replace the OT Law?

Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace;

If ye love me, keep my commandments.

If you’re like me, you’ve heard that the Mosaic law was either ceremonial (sacrifices), civic (census), or moral (don’t kill). We’re told that the moral law still applies today. But identifying what law is ‘moral’ is rather subjective. We’re told that Christians can skip circumcision but we just have to follow the Ten Commandments.

While Moses is rightly recognized within the US Supreme Court as the Great Lawgiver, and while Ten Commandments monuments are helpful to remind the people that our laws are rooted in a divine law, we need to discover the truth about the law.

But why worry about the law anyways? If we’re going to get past the Ten Commandments then let’s dwell under the Grace Awakening – we’re free from the law O blessed condition, sin all I want with Jesus’ permission! Are we antinomian?

No, it’s clear in scripture that Jesus wants us to keep His commandments.

If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love.

Interestingly this is not limited to just Jesus’ commands but also those of His apostles:

And if any man obey not our word by this epistle, note that man, and have no company with him, that he may be ashamed.

What enabled Paul to claim the ability to bind people’s consciences? What was so special about the Apostles?

After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. For I am the least of the apostles, that am not meet to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God.
1 Corinthians 15:7‭-‬9 KJV

He was not just someone who saw Jesus, but was personally taught by Him for three years in the desert.

For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ. Neither went I up to Jerusalem to them which were apostles before me; but I went into Arabia, and returned again unto Damascus. Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to see Peter, and abode with him fifteen days.

This apostolic authority allowed Paul and Peter to write Scripture!

And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you; As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.

As we continue we’ll look at how we can track the development of God’s law thru the different stages of human history.

Introduction to Dispensationalism

Leviticus Part 2 - Dispensationalism + Violence (1).jpg

There are Seven Dispensations marked by key people or events. We’ll identify the differences by the changes in God’s behavior to man throughout these periods.

What are the seven dispensations?

  1. Innocence (Creation)
  2. Conscience (The Fall)
  3. Promise (Noah)
  4. Covenant (Abraham)
  5. Law (Moses)
  6. Grace (Jesus)
  7. Kingdom (Millennium)

What distinguishes these dispensations from each other? Stay tuned! We’ll be discussing how dispensations vary based on the legal obligations required of man in each dispensation.
